NBA All-Star 2026 Starters Revealed: New USA vs World Format Changes Everything

The NBA unveiled its 2026 All-Star Game starters on Monday, January 19, setting the stage for the league’s boldest midseason experiment yet. Ten players earned starting nods through fan, player, and media voting. But this year, the traditional East vs West divide gives way to something entirely different.

For the first time in league history, All-Stars will compete in a USA vs World format. Two American squads will face one international team in a round-robin tournament at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. The 75th NBA All-Star Game takes place February 15 at 5 PM ET on NBC and Peacock.

How the New USA vs World Format Works

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association announced this format earlier in the 2025-26 season. Commissioner Adam Silver cited the concurrent Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on NBC and the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off success as influences.

Here’s the tournament structure. Twenty-four All-Stars will split into three teams of at least eight players each. Two squads feature American players. One team represents international talent. Four 12-minute games determine the champion.

The round-robin works like this. Team A plays Team B in Game 1. The winner faces Team C in Game 2. The Game 1 loser plays Team C in Game 3. The two teams with the best records advance to the championship game. If all three teams finish 1-1, point differential breaks the tie.

This format guarantees at least 15 players will technically “start” a game during the tournament. The traditional 10 starters announced Monday simply earned the honor through voting. Actual starting lineups for each mini-game remain fluid.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Embraces the Moment

The reigning Finals MVP enters his fourth All-Star Game and third consecutive starter selection. Gilgeous-Alexander leads the NBA in total points with 1,304 through 41 games. His 113-game streak of 20-plus points ranks second in NBA history behind only Wilt Chamberlain.

The Hamilton, Ontario native reflected on the selection’s meaning.

“It’s still as special as the first one was, honestly,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I grew up watching All-Star games as a kid, dreaming about playing in them. To be able to play in them will always have that same feeling. All the players that I looked up to, that I imitated my game after, played in those games, played on that stage. And for me to be able to do so, it’s a blessing and an honor.”

Gilgeous-Alexander’s efficiency stands out even among elite company. He’s shooting 54.7% from the field while carrying Oklahoma City’s offense. The Thunder enter the All-Star break as legitimate title contenders, and their Canadian star deserves significant credit.

LeBron James’ Historic Streak Ends at 21

For the first time since his rookie season in 2004, LeBron James was not named an All-Star starter. The 21-year streak represented unprecedented sustained excellence. No player in NBA history had ever been voted a starter for that long consecutively.

Several factors contributed to the streak’s end. James has played just 24 of the Lakers’ 41 games this season. His 22.6 points per game marks his lowest average since that 2003-04 rookie campaign. His record streak of 1,297 consecutive games with at least 10 points ended in December.

James remains eligible for reserve selection. Coaches vote for the 14 reserves, announced February 1 during NBC’s Sunday Night Basketball. Commissioner Silver can also make additions to complete rosters if the USA-World split doesn’t yield 16 American players and 8 international players naturally.

The 40-year-old is in his record-setting 23rd season. He’s earned All-NBA honors in 21 of his first 22 campaigns, including second-team recognition last year. Missing 17 games already this season complicates his postseason award eligibility.

Wembanyama Wins Tiebreaker Over Edwards

Victor Wembanyama earned the final Western Conference starting spot through the tiebreaker mechanism. He and Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards finished tied in the weighted voting formula. Fan votes served as the deciding factor, with Wembanyama edging Edwards by fewer than 5,000 votes out of nearly 2 million cast.

The voting breakdown revealed interesting splits. Fans had Portland’s Deni Avdija as a starter ahead of Wembanyama. Players voted Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant as starters instead of Doncic and Wembanyama. Media selected Edwards over Curry.

The weighted formula combined these perspectives. Fan voting counts for 50% of a player’s ranking. A 100-member media panel contributes 25%. Current NBA players provide the remaining 25%.

Wembanyama’s selection marks his second All-Star appearance. Last season, he became the youngest All-Star in San Antonio Spurs history as a reserve. The French phenom’s defensive versatility and offensive ceiling make him a perfect fit for the international squad.

First-Time Starters Make Their Mark

Four Eastern Conference players earned their first All-Star starter selections. Jalen Brunson’s ascension with the Knicks reached new heights. Cade Cunningham’s breakout season in Detroit finally received national recognition. Tyrese Maxey emerged as Philadelphia’s franchise cornerstone. Jaylen Brown continued Boston’s championship standard.

These selections reflect the NBA’s generational shift. The league’s star power increasingly concentrates among players in their mid-twenties. Cunningham and Maxey particularly benefited from increased media attention on their respective team turnarounds.

Brunson’s case stands out. The Knicks guard has transformed New York’s offense into a legitimate contender. His selection validates the franchise’s decision to build around him following Jalen’s arrival from Dallas.

What Comes Next

Coaches vote for reserves this week. The announcement comes February 1 at 6 PM ET during NBC and Peacock’s Sunday Night Basketball doubleheader. Each coach selects two guards, three frontcourt players, and two wild cards from their conference. They cannot vote for their own players.

The reserve pool will determine the final USA-World roster composition. If the natural selection doesn’t produce 16 Americans and 8 international players, Commissioner Silver makes supplementary selections.

Several players have strong reserve cases. Donovan Mitchell was notably snubbed as an Eastern Conference starter despite Cleveland’s dominant season. Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, and Jamal Murray lead Western Conference candidates. Scottie Barnes, Jalen Duren, and Jalen Johnson could represent the East’s emerging talent.

The Intuit Dome hosts its first NBA All-Star Game as the Clippers’ new home arena. This marks the seventh All-Star Game in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the fourth hosted by the Clippers franchise, and the first in Inglewood since 1983.

NBC broadcasts the event for the first time since 2002. The timing alongside the Winter Olympics creates a unique sports television weekend. The NBA hopes national pride motivates players more than recent All-Star exhibitions have.

Whether this format revives All-Star Game competitiveness remains uncertain. But the star power assembled for the World team suggests entertaining basketball regardless of effort levels. Doncic, Giannis, Jokic, SGA, and Wembanyama on one roster? That’s appointment viewing.
